Some Hampshire tollhouses

Emily and I went for a drive this afternoon and visited 4 of the tollhouses in our local area.

First was the one I used to live in, in Chineham, Basingstoke.

Then we went down the B3400 to Whitchurch.

Then headed south of Andover to Wherwell.

And finally north of Andover to Hurstbourne Tarrant.

I will upload more photos to the relevant tollhouse pages over at my tollhouse wiki

  1. Hi Keith,

I used to pass the Chineham Tollhouse every year or so as I travelled down the A33, starting in the days before it was extended.

There used to be a sign near it - in front of the house when approaching from the Reading direction, IIRC, maybe near where the gate is in your photo - saying "L'Ortolan".

I never knew if it was the name of the house or if it was some sort of French restaurant.

That sign disappeared some years ago (10 or more?) but I am now a bit baffled to find that there is a French restaurant of the same name in Shinfield near Reading but which is nearly 12 miles away from this Tollhouse!

Having lived in the Chineham Tollhouse, I wondered if you might know anything about the sign?
